Learning Hub

The Learning Hub at Sarah Bonnell provides the whole school community with the opportunity to access learning, information and cultural expression through written print, audio, visual and interactive resources and technologies. Equipped with state of the art technology, it offers a space where students can read, study and research in a comfortable and modern setting.

The Learning Hub is managed by Ms Kaur who is the Learning Hub Manager.

Sparx Reader Programme

All Key Stage 3 students are enrolled onto the Sparx Reader program which we are currently launching in our bi-weekly Reading Lessons. Sparx Reader is an engaging and supportive platform with which students can develop their reading and literacy skills. The program helps students to improve their literacy skills through reading a range of ebooks and testing their comprehension of it by completing online questions. They will be expected to complete a minimum of 30 minutes reading on Sparx reader every week as part of their reading homework.

To assess students’ reading ages, they will first sit a Reading Test which will give them their reading ages and book recommendations based on their level of literacy.

Students in Key Stage 4 also have their reading ages checked twice a year and are free to borrow books at their leisure.

Learning Hub WebApp

The Learning Hub has a fantastic online facility called the Learning Hub WebApp, which allows students to browse the catalogue, reserve books and write reviews on books they have read. It also gives them access to free online revision resources and vetted websites that enable students to research topics for the subjects they are studying. It is a great addition to the facilities we offer our students and we are proud of the interest it has generated amongst the school community.

Students can access the WebApp through their Google Classroom during term time and by using this link, Learning Hub WebApp, in the school holidays.

Hours of Operation

Outside of lessons, the Learning Hub is open to students at the following times.

 After School Procedure

Students are able to stay in the Learning Hub as part of our Enrichment Programme. Students wishing to stay in the Learning Hub after school will register in at 15:15 and can sign out at either 16:15 OR 17:00 as these are the times each session runs until. Students who are more than 15 minutes late to register in will not be permitted to stay.

Book Loans

The Learning Hub is currently stocked with almost 10,000 books. It is regularly updated with the latest publications and we ensure it meets the needs of the whole school community. A growing range of newspapers and magazines are also made available to support the curriculum, engage students in current affairs and to encourage them to read a wide-range of texts.

At Sarah Bonnell, we place a huge importance on literacy and actively encourage students to read, therefore, instilling a love of reading. We give our students the opportunity to borrow two books for a period of two weeks from our Learning Hub.

Whilst teaching our students the value of reading, we believe it is also beneficial for students to learn about responsibility. With this in mind, we operate a charging system where students are charged for loss or damage of books borrowed. In addition to this, a daily overdue charge of 10p per item, excluding weekends and school holidays, is also charged where applicable.
